Who it suits

Formats
Take first aid fully in class or as Online Blended. BLS runs in class only.
Certification
First aid 3 years, BLS 1 year
First aid and BLS have been separate courses since April 2019, with some overlapping skills.
CPR/AED Level C covers adult, child and infant. The majority of workplaces require
Intermediate first aid certification, so choose that level unless your employer says otherwise.

PALS is a 14-hour course for healthcare professionals who work with pediatric patients. You learn a systematic approach to assessing pediatric patients and practise high-intensity CPR as a team. Nurses, physicians and paramedics are among those who need it. Certified instructors teach it entirely in class.

What do I need before I take PALS?
You need a valid Basic Life Support (BLS) certificate before you register. To pass the course itself, you need 100% attendance and 75% on the multiple-choice knowledge test.
How long is the PALS course, and how long does the certificate last?
PALS takes 14 hours, all in class, and the certificate is valid for 2 years. Your BLS certificate lasts 1 year, so check its expiry date before your PALS class.
What does the PALS course cover?
PALS covers a systematic approach to assessing pediatric patients and high-performance CPR. It also covers cardiopulmonary arrest, shock emergencies, respiratory emergencies, arrhythmias, post-cardiac arrest management, and 2+ rescuer resuscitation and team dynamics.
How long is the BLS course, and when do classes run?
BLS takes 4 hours of in-class teaching time, in morning or evening classes. You need 100% attendance and 75% on the multiple-choice knowledge test. The certificate is valid for 1 year.
Is CPR-HCP the same as Basic Life Support?
No. Basic Life Support replaced the former CPR-HCP course. If your employer or school still asks for CPR-HCP, book BLS. Our CPR-HCP explainer has the details.
Do I need first aid as well as BLS?
Most healthcare professionals do. First aid and BLS have been separate courses since April 2019, with some overlapping skills. Book both and you are eligible for a bundle discount that applies to your BLS registration. Register for each course separately. See our first aid courses.
Is Intermediate First Aid the same as Standard First Aid?
Yes, Intermediate First Aid and Standard First Aid are two names for one course. The Canadian Red Cross changed the wording, so older certificates read Standard and newer ones read Intermediate.
