What is Basic Life Support Training?

Basic Life Support Training, or BLS, is used by first-responders, healthcare providers, and professionals responsible for public safety professionals to help save the lives of people suffering from cardiac or respiratory arrest. It is also applied when someone has an obstructed airway. The training covers the knowledge and skills required to perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). You learn how to use an automated external defibrillator (AED) and how to relieve obstructions of patient airways.

What will I be learning on this Basic Life Support First Aid course?

The Basic Life Training Course at Coast2Coast is approved by the Canadian Red Cross. On completion, you acquire a WSIB approved certificate.

Over the four hours of the course, participants are fully trained to play a vital role in their chosen path as healthcare professionals. The life-saving techniques learned during the Basic Life Support course include high-performance CPR on people who have no pulse and relieving the obstructed airway of an adult, child, or infant. You learn to check a person’s pulse, perform 2-person CPR, use a bag valve mask and how to do non-compression rescue breathing on a person with a pulse.

Participants also learn the Six Rights of Medication, handling trauma, hypothermia, anaphylaxis, and opioid overdose. Notably, the participants learn about the importance of post-cardiac arrest care, team communication, and debriefing after the event.

Besides the physical skills and knowledge, on completion of this course, your critical thinking and problem-solving skills are enhanced. These are all essential to becoming a valuable member of your team and helping improve patient outcomes.
