BLS Certification and Recertification
When you participate and complete our Red Cross approved Basic Life Support training course, you receive a WSIB approved certificate. The BLS certificate is valid for one year, after which you need re-training. At the moment, our Canadian Red Cross BLS program does not offer recertification training, but you can renew your certificate with us at a discounted rate.
Book with us for either your first certification or recertification. If you are just renewing your certificate, remember to select “Renew Your Basic Life Support (HCP)” when choosing the course from our dropdown menu, and bring your current BLS certificate to the training. Once renewed, your Basic Life Support certificate will be valid for another year.
If you have completed a Basic Life Support training with Heart & Stroke, then you may register for our Heart & Stroke BLS recertification course.
Before receiving certification, you must prove your hands-on skills and pass a multiple-choice exam. Failing at any of the two means that you cannot receive your Basic Life Support certification.
Passing the course is not difficult, but you can improve your chances by paying attention and asking questions during class. You are also allowed to take notes, and you should come to class prepared, having read the free Basic Life Support eBook beforehand.
Failing any course section is not disastrous because your instructor will give you another chance to pass after explaining where you went wrong. However, a second failure means you must retake the course by rescheduling your training with the office.
For anyone struggling to complete the training, we recommend completing the Standard First Aid & CPR/AED Level C training course in Brampton first. This course covers all the basics and lays the foundation for further training.

Frequently Asked Questions:
Read below to find the answers to some of the most frequently asked questions about our Basic Life Support course in Brampton:
Can you get BLS certified online?
No, the Canadian Red Cross does not provide the Basic Life Support training course online. This Basic Life Support course was created to give you the best possible training, and completing this in-class course assures you get your BLS training with a WSIB approved training partner.

Register for your in-class training to ensure that your Basic Life Support training prepares you to meet your significant role as a trainee or employee in healthcare or as a first responder.
Is BLS the same as CPR level C?
No. Even though CPR Level C and Basic Life Support are both based on CPR, they are two completely different levels of training. CPR Level C is general training suitable for anyone who wants to help someone in distress and recommended for all Canadians.
Then again, Basic Life Support is the specific CPR training required by all healthcare professionals, including first responders, nurses, dentists, and emergency workers. During the course, students learn how to provide CPR and care for patients in either a hospital or pre-hospital setting for adults, children, and infants.
Therefore, even though the two courses teach similar material, Basic Life Support goes into more detail.
How long is Basic Life Support training?
The Basic Life Support training course lasts for four hours. The certificate you get is currently valid for one year, following the upgrade made by the Canadian government in 2019. Basic Life Support training has proven more effective when renewed annually; this way, you can polish your skills and learn anything new in the field.
What are the 4 elements of Basic Life Support?
The four main elements of Basic Life Support are initial assessment, airway maintenance, expired air ventilation, and chest compression. These elements ensure that blood and oxygen flow sufficiently through the patient’s body. The priorities during Basic Life Support are assessing the quality of the circulation, providing an airway, offering CPR with rescue breathing, mouth-to-mouth resuscitation, and compressions. These only stop an AED is needed, and then the cycles are repeated. During this process, you also must examine for signs of circulation.
