What is Basic Life Support or BLS certification and recertification?

Previously, BLS was called HCP. At the time, the course certification was valid for three years. The upgraded Basic Life Support training replaced HCP in 2019 when the government decided that annual recertification is necessary for all.

The Burlington Basic Life Support Course is Canadian Red Cross approved. Once completed, all students have a WSIB approved certificate.

Currently, recertification is not available. If you already have a Basic Life Support certificate, you can renew it by registering for the entire training course, and you qualify for a discounted rate.

You can do this by selecting “Renew Your Basic Life Support (HCP)” from the dropdown menu during the registration process of your course. Remember to bring your current BLS certificate to the course.

BLS Course Content

Within four hours, the course covers all the essential aspects of Basic Life Support training. The course includes high-performance CPR, the Six Rights of Medication, and handling trauma. Expect to learn about dealing with cases of hypothermia, anaphylaxis, opioid overdose, and choking. Other essential elements of BLS training include post-cardiac arrest care, team communication, and post-event debriefing.

All of the above aspects are vital to your role as a healthcare professional. Learn more about the particulars of the Basic Life Support course on our website.

Who is BLS Training for?

BLS training is for health professionals working in hospitals, first responders, dentists, firefighters, etc. Students learn detailed CPR and how to provide it to patients in pre-hospital settings and inside hospitals, clinics, or doctors’ offices.

The Canadian Red Cross does not offer basic Life Support training online. In-class training is the only way to complete a WSIB approved course and get the full training required by health professionals. Basic Life Support Course at the Burlington facility is WSIB approved by the Canadian Red Cross.

On the other hand, we do offer online blended Basic Life Support training through Heart & Stroke. This is course is half-online and half-in-class. You may learn more about Heart & Stroke BLS here.

Upon completing the course, you must prove your hands-on skills and pass the multiple choice questions of the exam. Gaining these skills and knowledge require that pay attention through the course. You can take notes, read through the course e-book, and ask the instructors questions. You have one more chance to try again if you fail any part of the course. A second failure means you have to reschedule to attend the training again.

Completing a Standard First Aid & CPR/AED Level C training course in Burlington can help you if you are struggling to understand the basics of Basic Life Support.
