What is BLS Certification?

Basic Life Support Certification is similar to CPR training, but it is higher than CPR Level C, a general course suitable for anyone. All Canadians should know how to perform the life-saving skills of CPR Level C, but only healthcare professionals like doctors, nurses, first responders, dentists, etc., need BLS certification.

The training in both courses is similar, but with Basic Life Support training in Ottawa, your instructors go into more detail, ensuring you have the skills required for your job.

Who is Basic Life Support training for?

Basic Life Support training is for everyone working in the healthcare field. These professionals include everyone working in hospitals, doctors’ offices, dental teams, paramedics, and other first responders, including firefighters and emergency teams.

Should I take a full course or recertification?

Basic Life Support training certificates are only valid for one year in Canada. This training was previously called HCP, and certification was valid for three years. Since 2019, the Canadian government implemented changes that upgraded the certification to the one known as Basic Life Support. Since Basic Life Support is a course used by healthcare professionals, the Canadian government decided that the annual renewal was essential because of the role of BLS in saving countless lives.

Basic Life Support Ottawa is a Canadian Red Cross-approved training course that provides our students with a WSIB approved certificate. No BLS Recertification training is currently available through Red Cross, but you can renew your certificate. You can renew your certificate by registering for the full training again. We offer you a discounted rate, but remember to select “Renew Your Basic Life Support (HCP)”  when registering for the course. You will find this at the dropdown menu where you choose your course level.

You may also choose to complete a recertification training through our Heart & Stroke BLS program. This course is also WSIB approved and will provide you a certificate which is valid for one year.

When you are taking the course to renew your certificate, you must bring your current BLS certificate to class. On renewal, you receive a new Basic Life Support certificate from the Canadian Red Cross that is valid for one year.
