Validity of Certification

Basic Life Support training in Kanata is a WSIB approved course. BLS training through the Canadian Red Cross is only offered in an in-class format, but is available as a online blended course through our Heart & Stroke BLS program. Once completed, you receive a WSIB endorsed training partner certification, allowing you to work in the fields of healthcare or as a first responder.

Duration of Basic Life Support Certification

On passing our Basic Life Support training, your certification is valid for one year. Remember that the older HCP training and certification used to be valid for three years. Since 2019, the Canadian government decided that annual renewal is essential for everyone working in healthcare to ensure they are always well-trained and up-to-date with all the skills required.

What is BLS Training?

The 4-hour BLS training course is designed to build your confidence in performing CPR during your duties as a staff member of a fast-paced hospital setting or as an external rescuer. You learn how to do this alone or as part of a team. The training includes the critical steps required to assess the patient’s situation rapidly and what treatment to impart. Included are how to perform rapid defibrillation and how to use an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) when required.

Demonstrating Competence

Upon completing the course, you need to prove your competence by passing the multiple-choice exam and proving your hands-on skills. Passing the course is easy if you pay attention to the theory and demonstrations by the instructors. Before attending the course, you can also prepare yourself by reading the Basic Life Support eBook. Taking notes during the course is allowed, and our instructors are always willing to respond to any questions you have about the course material.

If you fail to pass any of the course’s sections, the instructor points out your mistakes, and you are given another opportunity to pass the test.

In a second failure, you cannot receive your certification and must retake the course by rescheduling another appointment.

Who Should Take Basic Life Support Courses?

All healthcare professionals require Basic Life Support training, and they can now take our course in Kanata. The people who should take Basic Life Support include all in-facility healthcare providers like nursing staff, medical doctors, dentists, and care aides. All pre-hospital care providers also need BLS training. These individuals may work for the fire service, as part of rescue teams, those trained in sports medicine, lifeguards, etc.

All healthcare workers requiring BLS certification must renew it annually. Renew your certificate by registering for our full training course. You qualify for our discounted price, but you need to bring your current certification with you to the training. When renewing, choose the “Renew Your Basic Life Support (HCP)” when selecting your course from the dropdown menu.

We also provide recertification training through our Heart & Stroke BLS program for those who have completed their original training with this training organization.
