Emergency Medical Responder (EMR) Program

An Emergency Medical Responder course provides advanced pre-hospital training. The EMR certificate is recognized as the highest tier of civilian first aid certification, so the emr program sits above intermediate/standard first aid and the shorter four-day pre-hospital courses. Participants learn to stabilize patients with life-threatening injuries and respond effectively to medical emergencies and trauma emergencies.

The EMR course lasts eight days, 80 hours of teaching time, 8:00 AM to 6:00 PM. Emr courses typically require 80 to 100 hours of instruction; with clinical time they range from 80 to 120 hours of combined theory and practical training. Our upgrade and recertification are four days.

To sign up for an EMR course, you’ll need a valid Intermediate/Standard First Aid CPR/AED Level C certificate. If you already have a current First Responder certificate, you can go straight into the 40-hour upgrade. Registration is simple and online—just choose your city and date to get started. On college campuses, students often take these two courses back to back, since both are required for emergency services applications.

100% attendance is mandatory to receive certification. A minimum score of 75% is required on the knowledge test — participants must complete 75% of the multiple choice test. You must give a successful demonstration of the required skills, and two practical scenarios must be successfully completed. Certification is issued upon successful course completion.

EMR certification is valid for three years from successful completion. Book the four-day recertification before those 3 years are up; it needs a valid EMR certificate. Note: your intermediate/standard first aid certificate also runs three years.

Twenty-four topic areas. The core curriculum of an EMR course includes foundational sciences and patient assessment: anatomy and physiology of the human body, and history taking. Core topics include patient assessment and trauma care — hemorrhage and soft tissue trauma, chest, abdominal and pelvic injuries, head and spinal injuries. EMR training covers advanced airway management and CPR/AED protocols. EMR courses teach trauma management for conditions such as severe hemorrhage: bleeding control, anatomy and physiology, shock. Spinal injuries, acute illness and pelvic injuries, head trauma and extrication are drilled as scenarios.

EMR courses use high-quality training equipment. Students practice skills using advanced mannequins and equipment — backboards, stretchers, stair chairs, oxygen, a birthing simulator — plus real first aid supplies. Courses include practical scenarios for hands-on training, and the course includes practical scenarios for skill demonstration. Lifting patients safely is drilled until automatic. Graduates may attend future courses free to practice.

EMR training equips healthcare professionals with skills for immediate medical care, and improves patient safety across their teams. EMR courses are valuable for firefighters and police officers who arrive first on scene, and fire departments list it among their required courses. EMR certification is required for many industrial and remote workers for workplace safety, and for private ambulance services. Individuals preparing for careers as paramedics benefit from EMR courses as prerequisites.

EMR certification opens various career paths in emergency services. EMRs can work in healthcare, fire services, or event coverage, and the certificate is a common employment screen. For a primary care paramedic diploma it is the usual on-ramp — check your provincial paramedic association for how it maps to registration across Canada. It also enhances administrative efficiency in healthcare settings.

EMR training follows the National Occupational Competency Profiles — the Paramedic Association of Canada framework defining the core competencies for pre-hospital care. Canadian Red Cross guidance sits on top, so the skills needed on the job are the skills assessed in class.

There are two course levels: First Responder takes four days to complete, while the EMR course runs for eight days and covers extra topics like pharmacology, in-depth patient assessments, obstetrics, and managing multiple-casualty incidents. If you already have a valid First Responder certificate, you’re eligible for the 40-hour EMR upgrade.
