First Aid, CPR & BLS Certification: Frequently Asked Questions

Answers based on Ontario WSIB rules, Canadian Red Cross policy, and Newmarket course options.

First Aid and CPR training certificates are valid for three years in Canada, and the Basic Life Support certificate is valid for one year. Our first aid courses are WSIB approved in Ontario and recognized by the Canadian Red Cross.

Most Newmarket workplaces require Intermediate First Aid (previously called Standard First Aid) with CPR/AED Level C. This WSIB approved program is often required for workplaces with six or more employees and covers severe medical emergencies, while Basic First Aid (previously called Emergency First Aid) suits lower-risk workplaces. Recognized certification is necessary for compliance with Ontario workplace safety regulations.

There are no prerequisites for full First Aid and CPR/AED courses. Recertification courses do have a prerequisite: a valid, unexpired certificate. Instructor Development courses require you to be 18 years of age or older, and youth course prerequisites are ages 11 to 15 for Babysitting and 9 to 13 for Stay Safe.

Yes. Blended learning combines online theory with an in-person practical training session, and is popular with students who have demanding schedules. You complete the online component in your own time, then practise hands-on skills with a Canadian Red Cross instructor in Newmarket. Certificates are issued within 48 hours after course completion.

Basic Life Support (BLS-HCP) is a Canadian Red Cross program for healthcare professionals such as nurses and first responders. Students practise high-performance CPR and teamwork training in fast-paced environments, plus airway management and trauma. The course earns a WSIB approved certificate valid for one year, with morning and evening sessions available.

Recertification options are available before your certificate expires and require a valid current certificate. First aid certificates are valid for three years, and recertification is one full day of onsite training. CPR/AED Level C can be recertified repeatedly, while Intermediate/Standard First Aid can be recertified once before a full course is required again. Certificates are issued within 48 hours.

Yes. Youth courses are designed for ages 9 to 15. The Babysitting course (ages 11 to 15) teaches teens to care for younger children, and the Stay Safe program (ages 9 to 13) teaches personal safety skills. Both encourage children to take charge of their safety and award a Canadian Red Cross certificate with no expiry.

Yes. Private training is available for groups of 8 or more, with savings up to $40 per student, centralized billing, and easy setup. Instructors can travel to your location, and training can be customized to fit your needs. Groups earn a WSIB approved certificate valid for three years, or one year for BLS-HCP.
