Online First Aid and CPR/AED Training

A first aid and CPR course online, Canada-wide, gives you the Canadian Red Cross theory as self-paced modules, then one in-class skills day if you need the certificate for work.

An online-only certificate is not WSIB approved, because it carries no hands-on skills test. Add one in-class skills day within 60 days of completing your modules and the approved CPR certification follows. Courses must meet provincial safety regulations to produce a valid certification, and WSIB-approved first aid courses comply with CSA standards.

Yes — Intermediate First Aid and Standard First Aid are two names for one course. The Canadian Red Cross changed the wording, so older certificates read Standard and newer ones read Intermediate. Both mean 16 hours of first aid with CPR Level C.

Most people need Intermediate/Standard First Aid & CPR/AED Level C, because the majority of workplaces require Intermediate first aid certification. In Ontario, Regulation 1101 sets the line:

• More than 5 workers: Intermediate/Standard First Aid, a two-day course in Ontario
• 5 or fewer workers: Basic/Emergency First Aid, a one-day course in Ontario
• No workplace requirement: CPR/AED only

First aid training is essential for personal support workers, and for social workers it fosters trust with the clients they visit. Healthcare workers need BLS skills instead. Basic Life Support is its own course.

The online portion of the training runs 8 hours for Intermediate/Standard First Aid, 4 hours for Basic/Emergency First Aid and 3 hours for CPR/AED.

No CPR certification an employer accepts can be earned entirely online, because every certifying route includes a hands-on skills test. Demonstrate your CPR skills in a short in-class session instead. Healthcare teams needing BLS skills follow the same rule. Around 90% of cardiac arrest victims die before help reaches them, and CPR started at once can double or triple someone’s chance of survival — which is what the skills test protects.
