Certification Requirements for Construction Workplaces

Construction sites in Ontario must meet Regulation 1101 under the Workplace Safety and Insurance Act, and because construction carries a high hazard rating, most sites require Intermediate/Standard First Aid with CPR/AED Level C rather than the basic level. Every course includes a mandatory in-person skills evaluation on CPR feedback manikins and AED trainers, meets CSA Standard Z1210, and delivers certificates within 48 hours.

Ontario

Regulation 1101 under the Workplace Safety and Insurance Act scales both the number of certified first aiders and the required certification level with the number of workers per shift and the site's hazard rating. Construction sites are high-hazard, so most require Standard-level certification from a WSIB approved provider. Working at Heights is separate mandatory training, which we also deliver.

Alberta & other provinces

Alberta sets construction first aid requirements in Part 11 of the Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) Code, using hazard level, workers per shift, and whether the site is close, distant, or isolated from medical care. Remote and northern sites carry the highest requirements. WorkSafeBC sets British Columbia's requirements, and Saskatchewan, Manitoba, and Nova Scotia each set their own under provincial Occupational Health and Safety legislation.

First Aid Requirements Across Canada

Every province sets its own workplace first aid rule through its own regulator, but almost all of them now point to the same national training standard, CSA Z1210, and the same kit standard, CSA Z1220. Yes. In Ontario, Regulation 1101 under the Workplace Safety and Insurance Act requires certified first aiders on every shift, with the number and level scaling by workers per shift and hazard rating. Because construction is high-hazard, most sites need Standard-level certification.

Most construction workers and trades need Intermediate/Standard First Aid with CPR/AED Level C, formerly called Intermediate (formerly Standard First Aid). Site office and administrative staff can often take Basic/Emergency First Aid instead.

No. Working at Heights is separate mandatory training in Ontario for workers using fall protection on construction projects. It does not replace first aid certification, and first aid does not replace it. We deliver both.
