BLS Certification and Recertification

At Coast2Coast, we provide the Canadian Red Cross Basic Life Support (BLS-HCP) course. At this time, we do not offer the BLS Recertification course through the Canadian Red Cross, but students are welcome to join us for a full BLS training at a discounted price by selecting the “Renew Your Basic Life Support (HCP)” option. Whether you select the full course or the renewal option, you will receive a Basic Life Support certificate from the Canadian Red Cross which is valid for one year. If you have any questions regarding the renewal option, please do not hesitate to contact us.

For those who have completed a BLS training through the Heart & Stroke organization, we do provide a Recertification option. Check out our Heart & Stroke BLS program for more information.

BLS Course Content

The Basic Life Support course is designed for healthcare professionals. The course content covers a variety of topics necessary to know in a medical environment, such as a hospital or pre-hospital setting. Topics include: Basic Life Support Skills, Glove Removal, Primary Assessment, Special Considerations, Airway Obstruction, Assisted Ventilation, Trauma, Hypothermia, Opioid Overdose, Anaphylaxis, the Six Rights of Medication, High-performance CPR for Adults, Children and Infants, Post-cardiac Arrest Care, Choking for Adults, Children and Infants, High-performance Team Communication and Post-event Debrief.

In addition to these important life-saving topics, the Basic Life Support course will discuss effective communication while working as a team. Students can expect to learn about designated roles, respect and how to debrief your team after completing a call or code.

Frequently Asked Questions:

Basic Life Support training through the Canadian Red Cross is only offered in an in-class format. This training cannot be completed online at this time.

Our training through Heart & Stroke BLS does have an online blended format, though. Complete half of your training online, then attend two hours in-class for hands-on skills.

Both courses are WSIB approved and valid for one year.

Basic Life Support is the healthcare professional level of CPR. This training is designed specifically for healthcare providers like nurses, dentists, paramedics and more! Training focuses on important aspects in the medical field such as high-performance CPR, opioid overdose, trauma, etc. It is a high-intensity training, meant to build confidence in your life-saving skills while working in a fast-paced environment.

CPR training courses, on the other hand, are for those who are not in a medical profession. Our normal CPR courses will cover some of the same topics as BLS, but not at the same intensity. If you would like to learn more about our CPR training courses, you may check out our CPR/AED page.

Basic Life Support used to be called “Level HCP” which was the highest level of CPR offered at the time. As of 2019, it has been upgraded to “Basic Life Support,” otherwise known as BLS. This training has many similarities to CPR Level C, but has a different focus and is designed specifically for healthcare providers.

Depending on your occupational or schooling needs, you may require a different level of training. We highly recommend that you confirm with your employer or school prior to registering to avoid any complications.

The Basic Life Support course is a four-hour training. We offer the BLS course throughout the day, making it easy to find a training that fits your schedule! Join us for a morning course from 9AM-1PM, an afternoon course from 2PM-6PM or an evening course from 6PM-10PM. If our Toronto facility dates do not fit into your schedule, check out one of our nearby facilities such as North York, Scarborough or Mississauga!
