Frequently Asked Questions — First Aid & CPR Certification in Calgary
We get the same questions from Calgary students before they book. The most common ones are about which course to take, whether online-only certificates are valid, and what to do when a certificate expires. We've answered all of them here — based on actual Alberta OHS rules, not guesswork.
The three CPR level tiers differ by the age groups they cover. CPR Level C — the most widely required level in Calgary and across Alberta — covers adult, child, and infant CPR and automated external defibrillator use, meeting Alberta OHS approved workplace safety rules for most employers. CPR Level B covers adult and child CPR only; CPR Level A covers adult CPR and AED alone — suitable only for workplaces with exclusively adult populations. Pick CPR/AED Level C if unsure — it is the most full and is the standard at our 222 16 Ave NE #225 Calgary site.
Yes. Your current certificate stays valid until it expires. Since March 31, 2023, Alberta aligned with the national CSA Z1210-17 standard, renaming courses: "Emergency First Aid" is now called "Basic First Aid" and "Standard First Aid" is now called "Intermediate First Aid" in OHS Code terminology. The Canadian Red Cross still uses the familiar "Emergency" and "Standard" names for their programs, which comply fully with the updated Alberta OHS Code. Coast2Coast's training at 222 16 Ave NE #225 meets all current Alberta OHS rules.
No. Alberta OHS approved certification requires an in-person skills test . You cannot earn a valid workplace certificate through a fully online course. Coast2Coast uses a blended learning format: complete theory online at home, then attend a hands-on skills session at 222 16 Ave NE #225. Watch out for fully online certificates at low prices. These are not valid for Calgary workplace OHS Code Part 11 compliance Your employer, Alberta Health Services, or SAIT clinical programs.
No. On both counts. You must recertify with the same body that issued your original certificate. Also, under Alberta OHS regulations, if your certificate has expired by even one day, you must take the full course at 222 16 Ave NE #225 — there is no grace period. This is an Alberta OHS requirement, not a Coast2Coast policy. Bring your valid original Canadian Red Cross certificate to verify eligibility before class begins. Book your recertification at least 3 weeks before your expiry date.
Yes. Both are required under Alberta OHS regulations. Security guards require at minimum Emergency First Aid & CPR/AED Level C, with many Calgary employers asking for Standard First Aid for wider coverage. For construction workers, Part 11 of the Alberta OHS Code — combined with Schedule 2 hazard level rules — specifies the number of certified first aiders required per shift, the training level, and kit type based on worker count and worksite hazard classification. Calgary construction sites are almost always classified as high hazard. Coast2Coast's Alberta OHS approved courses at 222 16 Ave NE #225 meet all rules.
