Common Questions

First Aid, CPR & BLS Certification: Frequently Asked Questions

Answers based on Ontario WSIB rules, Canadian Red Cross policy, and Oakville course options.

Yes. Online blended first aid and CPR/AED courses are a quick way to earn a WSIB approved Canadian Red Cross certificate. Training is split into an online component, completed at your own pace beforehand, and an in-class session where you practise CPR, bandaging, and AED use with an experienced instructor. WSIB compliance is required for many workplace safety programs in Ontario.

Most Oakville workplaces require Intermediate First Aid (previously called Standard First Aid) with CPR/AED Level C. Emergency First Aid & CPR/AED Level C can be completed in one day for lower-risk sites, while Intermediate/Standard First Aid runs about two days and adds topics like poisons and environmental illness. Certificates are valid for three years.

Basic Life Support (BLS-HCP) replaced CPR-HCP. It is designed for healthcare professionals such as nurses, paramedics, and first responders, and covers high-performance CPR, recognizing and responding to cardiovascular emergencies, and team-based response. BLS courses run about four hours and the certificate is valid for one year.

CPR/AED Level A covers adults only, while CPR/AED Level C teaches skills for all ages, including children and infants. Level C is the standard requirement for most workplaces and healthcare pathways. AED training is included in all CPR courses, and CPR/AED certification is valid for three years.

Certification cards are issued within 48 hours of successful completion, and a temporary certificate valid for WSIB purposes is issued on the training day. First Aid and CPR/AED certificates are valid for three years, and BLS certification is valid for one year.

If your Canadian Red Cross certificate is still valid, you can renew it with a shorter recertification course that refreshes current techniques and requires full attendance. CPR/AED Level C can be recertified multiple times, while Intermediate/Standard First Aid can be recertified once before the full course is required again. Book before your current certificate expires.

Private and group training is available for groups of eight or more, ideal for companies certifying employees or schools certifying students. You choose the date, time, and location, and a certified Canadian Red Cross instructor brings the equipment. Savings run up to $40 per student.

Yes. The Canadian Red Cross Babysitting course is for ages 11 to 15 and the Stay Safe program is for ages 9 to 13. Youth courses teach emergency preparedness, leadership, managing difficult behaviours, and life-saving skills such as dealing with choking, and award a Canadian Red Cross certificate with no expiry.
