Our Canadian Red Cross First Aid Instructor Transfer program in Toronto is a certification that allows students to teach Red Cross first-aid courses such as CPR, Emergency First Aid, Standard First Aid, Child Care First Aid, and Marine Basic First Aid in Brampton.

There are two ways for candidates with previous experience to qualify for the Instructor Development Program:

  1. They are a First Aid instructor with a ministry-approved agency.
  2. A Canadian Red Cross Water Safety Instructor/or Trainer or an educator (elementary or secondary level).

Depending on which category candidates fall into, they will be trained in one of the following ways:

If candidates fall into the 1st category, they will already have some knowledge of First Aid from other organizations and can apply what they know to the Red Cross program. However, they will still have to finish a Fundamentals of Instruction component and pass prerequisites, after which their skills will be evaluated.  Candidates will then engage in a short, in-class teaching experience.

Category 2 candidates will be instructed on Red Cross delivery approaches for a specific type of classroom, which is up to 14.5 hours long. To complete this course pathway, the candidate must first pass a skills evaluation. Candidates who have worked as instructors or Red Cross-approved Water Safety Instructors may skip the Fundamentals of Instruction requirement and attend a Discipline-Specific component. After this component is completed, participants will complete a teaching experience component that allows them to practice peer teaching sessions.

Candidates who successfully complete the training will be awarded a certificate that is valid for three years.

Prerequisites

  • Must be 18 years of age or above
  • Must hold a valid Canadian Red Cross certificate in the discipline you wish to teach
