Most Ontario workplaces require Intermediate/Standard First Aid, also called Standard First Aid, with Level C and AED. This course meets WSIB Regulation 1101 requirements for workplaces with more than five workers. The majority of workplaces require this certification.
Level C covers adults, children, and infants. The AED component includes trainer practice with an automated external defibrillator trainer. No prerequisites are required, and participants must achieve a minimum grade of 75% on evaluations.
Basic Life Support replaced CPR HCP in April 2019. It is designed for healthcare participants, provider roles, and clinical teams that need high-performance resuscitation, team-based response, and advanced airway practice. BLS certification is valid for one year.
Certificates issued after successful completion are usually delivered within 48 hours. Cards and certificates are valid for three years for most programs, including Standard First Aid and AED Level C, unless a specific program states otherwise.
Recertification must be completed with the same certifying body. Standard First Aid holders can recertify only once, and if certification is over three years old, the full course is required. Recertification requires 100% attendance and a minimum grade of 75%.
