First Aid & CPR Certification — Frequently Asked Questions
Answers based on Ontario WSIB rules and Red Cross policy — no guesswork.
Most Ontario workplaces require Intermediate/Standard First Aid with CPR/AED Level C — the minimum standard under Ontario's OHS Act. WSIB approved certificates are required (online-only ones are not accepted) and issued within 48 hours. No prerequisites.
Two names for the same course — the Ontario Intermediate/Standard First Aid certification, renamed Intermediate First Aid in 2022. Certificates are valid three years and renewable within 90 days of expiry at a 75% minimum grade.
We train in Belleville, with easy access from Highway 401, downtown Belleville, Loyalist College, Quinte West, and Trenton.
CPR/AED Level C is valid for 3 years. Recertification must be done with the same certifying body, so a Lifesaving Society certificate cannot be recertified with the Red Cross — you would take the full course instead. Intermediate/Standard First Aid recertification is available once, within 90 days of expiry; after that, the full course is required.
Yes. BLS replaced CPR-HCP in April 2019. It is the Red Cross standard for healthcare professionals and first responders, covering high-quality CPR and opioid overdose response to improve patient outcomes. BLS is valid one year and mandatory for clinical roles like nurses and paramedics. Non-clinical workers should take Intermediate/Standard First Aid.
WSIB approved certificates are issued within 48 hours of completion, often the same or next business day, with a minimum 75% grade and 100% attendance. For blended courses, online access is emailed within 24 hours of registration.
