BLS is the healthcare provider BLS certification. Adult and Pediatric First Aid/CPR/AED is for workplace responders and the general public. BLS covers two-rescuer CPR, AED use, bag-mask ventilation and team-based resuscitation, and the American Heart Association issues the eCard. The Adult and Pediatric course covers CPR and AED use for adults, children and infants, plus first aid for choking, bleeding, burns and other emergencies, and the American Red Cross issues the certificate. If your employer is a hospital, clinic or other healthcare facility, ask whether they require BLS. For most other jobs, the first aid course is the right choice.
You can take fully in person first aid training, and a certification that meets workplace requirements needs a hands-on skills session. The American Red Cross blended and in-person courses include a two-year certification that meets OSHA requirements, and online-only courses skip the hands-on skills check. Both are valid for two years. An American Red Cross Adult and Pediatric First Aid/CPR/AED certificate is valid for two years from the date it is issued. A BLS eCard from the American Heart Association is also valid for two years. To renew, book the same course again at least a month before your card expires. Our courses are emergency medical response training for everyday responders and healthcare staff, not paramedic or EMT programs. You learn to recognize an emergency, call 911, give CPR, use an AED Trainer and give first aid until help arrives. Depending on the course, you also practice the recovery position, choking response and care for bone and joint injuries.
