CPR bridges this critical gap by providing artificial circulation until the heart can be restarted β either through defibrillation or advanced medical interventions.
Modern CPR guidelines emphasize the importance of high-quality chest compressions. Effective compressions require pushing hard and fast in the centre of the chest at a rate of 100 to 120 compressions per minute, with a depth of at least 5 centimetres for adults. Allowing the chest to fully recoil between compressions and minimizing interruptions ensures that each compression delivers the maximum amount of blood to the brain. Starting CPR within the first few minutes of cardiac arrest maintains blood flow to the brain and heart, buying precious time until a defibrillator can be used. Hands-only CPR β continuous chest compressions without rescue breathing β is recommended for untrained bystanders and is nearly as effective as conventional CPR for adult cardiac arrest.
Early AED Defibrillation

Defibrillation β delivering an electrical shock to the heart β is the only effective treatment for ventricular fibrillation, the most common rhythm in sudden cardiac arrest. AEDs are designed for use by anyone, with voice prompts that guide the user through each step. When an AED is used within the first few minutes, combined with CPR, survival rates can exceed 70 percent.
