Pediatric CPR and First Aid Certification

A babysitting certificate shows your student can care for children, not resuscitate one. Pediatric First Aid, CPR and AED is a separate certification, and the American Red Cross allows it to be added to the in-person Babysitter’s Training class. It is valid for two years and includes a hands-on skills session with an instructor.

Common Questions

Babysitting and Child Care Training FAQs

What age is a Red Cross babysitting course for?

The American Red Cross recommends babysitting courses for ages 11 to 16, and American Red Cross Babysitter’s Training is built for that range. The basics course takes 11 and up; Advanced Child Care Training suits older teens and young adults.

How many training hours does a Red Cross babysitting course take?

Between about 4 and 7 hours, depending on format. Babysitting Basics takes about 4 hours at your own pace. Babysitter’s Training runs around 5 hours in one day, or just over 7 with Pediatric First Aid, CPR and AED.

Is Pediatric CPR and First Aid included in babysitting courses?

Not automatically. Babysitting and child care courses teach caregiving and emergency response, not resuscitation, so Pediatric CPR is a separate certification added to the in-person class. It lasts two years and needs a hands-on skills session.

What do students learn in a babysitting class?

Basic child care techniques come first: feeding, holding, and diapering infants. Students learn to recognize illness or injury and apply behavior management strategies. Emergency preparedness and child safety run through every module, including household risks, plus child development basics and leadership development.

Does a babysitting course help a teenager get paid work?

The American Red Cross reports that 8 in 10 surveyed parents said they would pay more for a trained babysitter holding Red Cross babysitting certifications.

Training enhances credibility with parents seeking babysitting services. Babysitting training provides essential safety and business skills, and every American Red Cross babysitting course covers professionalism, marketing, and how to start your own babysitting business.

Do these courses count toward early childhood education or a CDA credential?

No. Child care courses here do not fulfill all state requirements for professional licensing or count toward a Child Development Associate credential or CDA renewal.

For clock hours in the early childhood field, an annual training plan, or staff training for childcare centers, you need a state-approved early childhood provider. We sell no annual subscription, and licensed childcare providers should check their state requirements. Ours teach early childhood caregiving for family caregivers, not a licensing credential.

How much does a Red Cross babysitting course cost?

Pricing is published when registration opens. [PLACEHOLDER: insert each course price.] Use any notify button for dates and price.

Do participants retain access to course materials after completion?

Yes. Participants retain access to course materials and resources after completion, on the Red Cross Learning Center, including the Babysitter’s Training Handbook, and can download them to a phone or computer.

What certificates do students receive?

Babysitting Basics ends with a final quiz, then students download a printable certificate. Babysitter’s Training issues a 10-year certificate. Both are American Red Cross babysitting certificates, and recognized certificates are what parents ask to see.

Can babysitting classes be booked for a school or community group?

Yes, for scout troops, schools, camps, and community groups. Send your group size and week.

When do Coast2Coast babysitting courses open for registration?

All three launch soon, none bookable yet. Use any notify button for dates.
