First Aid & CPR Workshops

Not every job asks for a certification card. If you want to know what to do when a baby chokes or a heart stops, and you do not need an official American Red Cross certificate to prove it, a workshop is the faster way in. Our sessions are short, hands-on and built around the things people actually panic about — the same skills our certification classes teach, without the exam.

  • 150,000 students trained in first aid and CPR badge
  • Express certificate issued within 48 hours badge
  • American Red Cross Authorized Training Provider badge

Why a Workshop

Why Take First Aid & CPR Workshops

A full day of training asks for a full day and a full fee. Plenty of people need neither. New parents, grandparents, nannies, coaches and volunteers usually want one thing: to stop feeling helpless. Our workshops give you the practical part of First Aid and CPR training without the time commitment or the cost of a certification course, and you learn it in a room with an instructor rather than off a screen.

  • Great Savings

A workshop costs less than our first aid classes because it is shorter and skips the certification process. You pay for the training, not the paperwork.

  • Short & Convenient

Most sessions run about three hours. That fits an evening or a nap time, which is the only schedule some of our students have left.

  • Learn General Knowledge

You learn the response, not the exam, and you learn it standing up. Instructors work through real first aid emergencies, explain the science in plain language, answer the question you were too embarrassed to ask, and move on.

  • Earn a Participation Certificate

Everyone who finishes a session receives a Coast2Coast Certificate of Participation. It records what you covered and the date you covered it.

These workshops are not certification courses. A Certificate of Participation is not an American Red Cross certificate, and it does not satisfy an employer’s OSHA first aid requirement, a state licensing rule or any other regulatory requirement. If your job, your license or your school needs a card, book one of our American Red Cross first aid certification classes or a CPR and AED course instead. Both run as blended learning or fully in person.

Workshop Types

What to Expect in Our First Aid & CPR Workshops

Three workshops, answering three different worries. Two are written for people caring for a baby. The third is a blank page you fill in with your group. Every session is hands-on practice with an instructor in the room, so you leave having done the skill rather than watched it. None of the three is a certification class.

Know Your Baby Workshop

Are you a new or expecting parent? The early weeks can feel like a test nobody handed you the notes for. This session hands you the notes. It covers the daily care questions that keep first-time parents awake, run by an instructor who has answered all of them before and who trains new parents every week.

You will practice each of the four topics in the list below rather than hear them described, and you will learn to spot a childhood illness early enough to act on it.

By the end you will have handled an infant manikin, asked your questions out loud, and heard the answers. Most parents say what changes is not knowledge so much as nerve. It is the shortest training on this page and the easiest to learn from cold.

Baby Emergency Preparedness Workshop

Submit Inquiry

Worried about how to deal with a baby who starts choking or stops breathing? That worry is well founded. Small children are curious and they put things in their mouths, and a blocked airway gives you seconds rather than minutes.

This workshop trains parents and caregivers to recognize both emergencies and respond to them. You practice infant and child CPR on manikins, clear a blocked airway at both sizes, and see how an automated external defibrillator trainer works so the device is familiar before you ever need one.

Our instructors run each skill until the room can do it without prompting. That repetition is the point — under stress you do what you have rehearsed, not what you have read. CPR is not about restarting a heart, whatever television has taught you. The science is plainer than that: steady compressions keep oxygen moving to the brain while you wait for medical professionals to arrive, and buying that time is what CPR training is for.

Built Around Your Group

Build Your Own Workshop

Submit Inquiry

Build Your Own Workshop suits groups who want first aid skills and CPR practice without an official American Red Cross certificate behind them. Daycare staff, office volunteers, sports clubs, community groups — anyone who needs the training more than the card.

You pick the topics from the list below — CPR and AED at any age, or controlling life-threatening bleeding. One of our instructors builds the training around your choices, so nobody sits through twenty minutes on a hazard your group will never meet.

Length depends on how much you choose. We can run the training at one of our facilities or at your own site, and everyone who takes part receives a Coast2Coast Certificate of Participation at the end.

  • A 99.9% success rate next door

Students in our certification classes pass at a rate of 99.9%. Nothing in a workshop is graded, so read that number as a measure of how we teach rather than a promise about your own session.

  • Practice instead of slides

Three hours is short. We spend it on manikins rather than a presentation, and you repeat each skill until your hands do it without being told.

  • Ask the embarrassing question

The questions people apologize for asking are the ones our instructors answer most often. A small room makes that easier than a lecture hall does.

  • Your site or one of ours

Workshops run at our Long Beach and Los Angeles facilities, or at your own site when you book for a group.

Inside the Room

  • Students kneeling around an adult manikin practicing chest compressions with AED trainer pads in place
  • An instructor showing a student how to hold and swaddle an infant manikin
  • One student operating an AED trainer while a partner continues chest compressions on a manikin
  • A class practicing wound care with simulated blood during a bleeding control drill
  • A student practicing rescue breaths on an adult manikin while the instructor watches
  • An instructor guiding a student through wrapping a triangular bandage around a partner
  • An instructor checking an arm sling on a seated student during a First Aid session
  • An instructor coaching a student through compressions with an AED trainer laid out beside them
  • A class working through chest compressions on adult manikins side by side

Which One Do You Need

Workshop or Certification Class?

Same room, same instructor, same manikins. Our first aid classes and AED courses add an exam at the end; a workshop stops before it. That is the whole difference, and it decides what the paper is worth afterwards.

Common Questions

Workshop Questions, Answered

Do these First Aid workshops come with a certification?

No workshop on this page certifies anyone. Everyone who finishes receives a Coast2Coast Certificate of Participation, which records the topics you practiced and the date you practiced them. If you need a card an employer will accept, our first aid classes are a separate booking.

What is the difference between a workshop and a first aid class?

A first aid class ends in a certificate you can hand an employer; a workshop ends in a record of what you practiced. What a class adds is a written exam, a skills test, and the American Red Cross first aid training standard behind the certificate.

How long does each workshop run?

Know Your Baby and Baby Emergency Preparedness each run three hours. Build Your Own runs as long as the topics you pick, so a group choosing two subjects finishes well before a group choosing six. Tell us your list and we will tell you the length before you commit.

Which workshop suits a new parent best?

Book Know Your Baby for everyday care and Baby Emergency Preparedness for choking and CPR. Parents who want both usually take them on separate evenings rather than back to back, because three hours of practice is about as much as anyone absorbs in one sitting.

Will a workshop satisfy my employer’s OSHA requirement?

No. A Certificate of Participation meets no regulatory requirement, OSHA included. An employer covered by OSHA needs someone trained to render first aid, and what satisfies that is first aid training and certification with a skills test behind it. Book a certification class and keep the workshop as extra practice.

Do I need first aid experience to attend?

Every workshop starts from the basics. You do not need to have taken a course before, and plenty of people in the room have never touched a manikin. Instructors pitch the session to whoever turns up, which is easier to do in three hours than in a full day.

What does a certification class cover that a workshop does not?

A full class works through the whole first aid syllabus rather than a few topics. Injuries and wound care techniques include controlling life-threatening bleeding and treating burns, and the class goes on through broken bones, head and spinal injuries, severe allergic reactions and poisons. Training may include handling environmental emergencies like heat stroke and frostbite. Emergency response basics covered include assessing scene safety and contacting emergency services, and the class ends in a graded skills test. A workshop goes deep on a few things; a class goes wide and certifies you.

How long does a first aid or CPR certification last?

First Aid certification is valid for two years before renewal, and CPR certification expires on the same two-year cycle. That clock applies to the certification classes, not to a Certificate of Participation, which carries no expiry because it certifies nothing. Recertification courses refresh skills and update techniques against the current guidelines, and the American Red Cross also runs shortened review courses for a card that is still valid and close to expiring.

Do your first aid classes cover children as well as adults?

American Red Cross offers first aid training for children and adults in the same course. Adult and Pediatric First Aid/CPR/AED teaches both age groups together, so a parent who wants a certificate rather than a workshop books once instead of twice. The baby workshops on this page stay narrower on purpose — infants and small children only, in three hours.

Can you run a workshop for our group?

Yes — Build Your Own exists for exactly that. You choose the topics, we build the training around them, and the session runs at your own site or at one of our California facilities. Daycares, camps, sports clubs and office teams book these most often.

How do we book a workshop?

Send an inquiry and we will come back with dates. There is no public calendar for the workshops, so tell us which one you want and roughly how many people, and we will find a session that fits. Call 1-866-291-9121 if you would rather work it out on the phone.
