Before applying for a security license, you need to prove your eligibility.

  • Be 18+ years old

  • Legally allowed to work in Canada

  • Clean criminal record

Is Online Training Recognized? (Ontario Focus)

In Ontario, online security guard courses are fully accredited if they meet the 33.5-hour requirement and provide a certificate . Other provinces vary:

  • Alberta: Accepts some virtual security guard training

  • BC: Requires in-person components

Always check your province’s accreditation requirements for safety training.

Apply for Your Security License Online

Submit the following documents with your application for your license as part of the registration process:

  • Your training test number

  • Security guards and private investigators with an existing license from another province must provide a copy of both sides of their license.

  • Passport-style photo (not a selfie; valid 6 years)

  • Two valid IDs (proving identity + work eligibility)

  • Documents that are not accepted include your health card, social Insurance number (SIN) card, firearms license, etc.

  • Completed Guarantor Form (someone who’s known you 2+ years)

  • Payment for license type

How to get an online license?

For your online training license you need:

  • Create a ServiceOntario ONe-key ID

  • Scan required documents

  • The two different valid government-issued identification documents (IDs) that haven’t expired must be scanned clearly front and back. 

  • Get approval in 10 business days.

  • Submit digital application

  • Receive physical card by mail (or print digital copy)

Note: Renewals: You can apply for guard license online renewal up to 90 days before expiration.

License Expiry:

First-time licenses expire 2 birthdays after issue date. Renewals last 2 years from your birthday. Example: Issued Oct 1, 2020 → Expires Dec 15, 2021 (if birthday is Dec 15)
