BLS Certification and Recertification
The Canadian Red Cross and Heart & Stroke both approve our Basic Life Support training courses, and the certification we provide is WSIB approved. Currently, our Canadian Red Cross courses do not offer Recertification training, but we have a solution for you: Students who have completed the Basic Life Support course can renew their certificate by registering for our full BLS training at our discounted rate. You can select “Renew Your Basic Life Support (HCP)” during registration from the dropdown menu when requested to choose your course level.
On the other hand, our Heart & Stroke BLS training does offer a Recertification course.
You must bring your current BLS certificate to your class when renewing. Our renewal option provides you with a Basic Life Support certificate from the Canadian Red Cross. Canadian law requires the annual renewal of the certificate.
BLS Course Content
During the four-hour Basic Life Support training, we cover all the significant life-saving material required. Besides learning about high-performance CPR, the course’s additional topics include handling trauma, choking, hypothermia, anaphylaxis, opioid overdose, and the Six Rights of Medication. Your training enhances your knowledge in other vital areas, including offering patients post-cardiac arrest care, team communication, and post-event debriefing.
These topics all play a vital role in your career as a healthcare professional. Find more information about our Basic Life Support course on our website.
Frequently Asked Questions:
How long does Basic Life Support certification last?
With our Basic Life Support training, all students receive a certificate valid for one year. If you are confused, the training was called HCP in the past, and the certificate was valid for three years. Since April 2019, the government upgraded this course to Basic Life Support, and like HCP, the course is designed for healthcare professionals. Annual training ensures healthcare professionals enhance their life-saving training regularly.
Is BLS online valid?
The Canadian Red Cross does not provide online Basic Life Support training courses, but our Heart & Stroke BLS program does offer online blended training. If you require WSIB approved training, you may choose to complete your BLS through either organization. Register for our training today. Do I need CPR if I have BLS?
No. You don’t need CPR if you have Basic Life Support training and certification because they are both CPR training, just at different levels. Remember, BLS is the healthcare level of CPR.
Are BLS and CPR the same thing?
As explained above, BLS and CPR are two different levels of CPR training. CPR Level C is a general course popular with many Canadians who want to assist others in emergencies. On the other hand, Basic Life Support provides special training for healthcare professionals such as first responders, nurses, dentists, rescuers, and more.
BLS prepares you to provide CPR and care for patients in fast-paced and demanding settings in hospitals or pre-hospital settings. The material taught in each course is similar, but the Basic Life Support training delivers essential details healthcare providers require.
What are the steps of BLS?
The steps of BLS require you to read over the free Basic Life Support e-Book before attending the four-hour course. Once you attend the class, our instructors take you through the paces of professional CPR and other vital techniques.
Remember, you can take notes and ask questions. To pass, you need to pay attention throughout the course. Once the course finishes, you must prove your hands-on skills and pass the multi-choice questions in the exam.
If you fail either part of the training, your instructor offers advice on the details you struggled with and a second chance to pass. A double fail means you cannot receive your certificate and must attend the training again. Contact the office to reschedule your training if you are in this situation.
These steps to completing the training ensure you receive your valid WSIB certification.
Sometimes people may struggle to complete the course, and we recommend they take a Standard First Aid & CPR/AED Level C training course in Scarborough to understand the basics better.
