Our Basic Life Support Course Content
The Basic Life Support Course Nepean entails a 4-hour training covering all the essential life-saving material professionals require.
Besides high-performance CPR, students can expect to learn about handling trauma, anaphylaxis, opioid overdoses, hypothermia, choking, and post-cardiac arrest care. Other important issues covered by the instructors are team communication, the Six Rights of Medication, and debriefing after an event.
These topics all play a vital role in providing your services to patients and victims as a healthcare professional. Find out more about the Basic Life Support course on our website.
Basic Life Support Certification
Finishing our Canadian Red Cross Basic Life Support course in Nepean qualifies you to receive a WSIB approved certification. We do not currently offer BLS Recertification training through the Red Cross. However, you can renew your certificate by taking the full course at a discounted rate if you have previously completed the Basic Life Support course.
If you took your previous BLS course through Heart & Stroke, we do offer recertification through that organization as well. Check out our Heart & Stroke BLS program to learn more.
Many people confuse CPR Level C and Basic Life Support, thinking they are the same. However, even though they are similar, Basic Life Support is specialized care that provides more detail for healthcare professionals. With the course, they learn how to provide CPR and care for patients in a hospital or pre-hospital setting. All Canadians can benefit from the knowledge taught in a CPR Level C course, but medical teams need more intense training.
Our BLS course is unavailable online or blended form through the Canadian Red Cross, but you may register for an online blended format through our Heart & Stroke BLS program. Register into our Basic Life Support course in Nepean to get a certificate with a WSIB approved training partner if it is a requirement of your job or education.
Some people do fail the BLS course because you have to prove your hands-on skills and pass the multiple choice exam after the course. Failing either part of the course is not the end of the world; your instructor is willing to give you some advice and offers you a second chance to pass. However, a double fail means that you cannot receive the certificate. You just need to re-do the training again by scheduling another appointment with the office.
Tips to ensure you pass: Pay attention to the instructors throughout the course, take notes, the instructors are there to answer any queries, and read the Basic Life Support e-book (available free for you online) before the course.
For those that find the BLS course too challenging to complete, we recommend taking the Standard First Aid & CPR/AED Level C training course in Nepean first. Once you have understood the basics, the Basic Life Support course is more straightforward.
Basic Life Support Recertification
Like we mentioned previously, BLS recertification is currently unavailable, but you can do the full course again to renew it. Taking the course with us again grants you a discounted rate. To renew your certification, select “Renew Your Basic Life Support (HCP)” during registration. This option is available on the dropdown menu, where you can choose the course level. If you are renewing your certification, it is essential to bring your current BLS certificate to class. With the renewal, your Canadian Red Cross Basic Life Support certificate is once again valid for one year.
Who Should Take BLS Courses?
All in-facility healthcare providers need to complete a Basic Life Support course successfully, including doctors, nursing staff, and care aids. All other medical professionals like dentists, physiotherapists, and sport team doctors also must complete the course. Moreover, all pre-hospital care providers, including paramedics, fire services, ski patrols, lifeguards, etc. require the certification.
