A career as a security guard can be highly fulfilling and provide an opportunity to serve the community and make a meaningful impact while ensuring safety and security.

At Coast2Coast we offer a security program that will provide our students with a range of skills and qualifications that will enable them to carry out their duties effectively and efficiently.

Responsibilities and Duties of a Security Guard

The tasks of a security guard may vary based on the industry in which they are hired. The tasks include making observations for security breaches, supervising entrances of large organizations,  guarding an assigned post, patrolling property and reporting dangerous situations or suspicious behavior and some be private bodyguards protecting one or a group of people. Some security guards work in Airports, Hotels, Schools, Hospitals, Office Buildings and Shopping malls. Security guards carry out these responsibilities to safeguard both private property and the general public.

Step 1: Understanding the Licensing Requirements for Security Guards in Canada

To become a security guard in Canada, you need to research the requirements for the province or territory in which you wish to work. Licensing requirements vary from province to province or territory, so it is important to find out what is required in your respective location.

Step 2: Meet the Eligibility Criteria

Fundamental literacy and numeracy skills, such as basic math, reading, and writing, are necessary for a security guard’s role. Therefore, to qualify for an entry-level security job, a high school diploma is typically a basic requirement.

  • You need to be over the age of 18.
  • You must pass a criminal record and identity checks.
  • You must be able to work legally in Canada.

Step 3: Complete the Required Training

To obtain a security license, it is mandatory for students to register and successfully complete a First Aid & CPR training program and an Emergency First Aid & CPR/AED Level C fulfilled with a one-day training program, which is the minimum requirement.

In Ontario one must complete the 40 hour Security Guard Training Course consisting of a minimum 33.5 hours spent on the online course. One must also complete an Emergency First Aid and CPR/AED training course.

Coast2Coast’s WSIB-approved Canadian Red Cross Training is flexible, with two different formats to choose from, which includes:

Traditional All In-Class: one day in-class training from 9AM-5PM

Online Blended: 4 hours of online work prior to attending an in-class session from 9AM-2:30PM.

Step 4: Apply for Security Guard License

Once one has completed the required training hours, they will receive a Training Completion Number (TCN) which will be used to book and write the Ministry approved Security License test.

The test contains 60 multiple-choice questions which must be completed in 75 minutes. In order to pass, you must receive a 62% mark or higher. You are allowed to take the test multiple times if you do not pass, but you will be charged a fee of $75.15 (price subject to change) for each attempt.

Once you pass the exam, you will receive an instant notification and your security guard license will be mailed to you.

To begin employment immediately, it is recommended to obtain a digital copy of the license, while the physical copy generally takes up to eight weeks to arrive.

Step 5: Find Employment

Once you have obtained your security guard license, it is important to start your job search on the right foot. One of the first steps you can take is to ensure that your resume is up-to-date and accurately reflects your qualifications and experiences. In order to effectively showcase your qualifications and experience in your resume, you will have to highlight all the relevant training and education you have accomplished.

In addition to highlighting your education and training, it’s also important to showcase your skills and abilities. Some key skills that are highly valued in the security industry include attention to detail, strong communication skills, and the ability to remain calm and focused under pressure. By demonstrating your competence in these areas, you can show potential employers that you have what it takes to succeed in the role.

Employers will want to verify that you are a licensed security guard, so it is crucial to include your security guard license number on your resume. This license number serves as proof that you have completed the necessary training and met the requirements to work as a security guard.

Once you have an updated and comprehensive resume, it is time to start your job search. Consider searching for job postings on online job boards, company websites, and recruitment agencies. You can also attend job fairs and networking events to meet potential employers and learn more about the industry.

Overall, preparation is key to acing your job interview and securing employment as a security guard. By investing time and effort into researching the company and position, practicing your interview skills, and showcasing your qualifications and experiences, you can increase your chances of success.

Step 6: Maintain your License

It is important to keep your license up-to-date to ensure you remain eligible for employment and take the necessary steps to renew it before it expires. By staying on top of your license renewal requirements, you can ensure that you are always in good standing with the licensing authorities and remain eligible for employment.

Ontario security licenses are linked to your date of birth, and the initial license is valid for two years until your next birthday. After that, you will need to renew it every two years.
