Do I Need First Aid & CPR Training?
Yes, students who want to receive a security guard license Ontario must enroll in, and pass, a First Aid & CPR training course. The minimum course requirement is Emergency First Aid & CPR/AED Level C which is a one day training. Coast2Coast offers WSIB-approved Canadian Red Cross training which can be completed in one of the two following formats:
- Traditional All In-Class: one day in-class training from 9AM-5PM
- Online Blended: roughly 4 hours of online work prior to attending an in-class session from 9AM-2:30PM
How Long does Security License Training Take?
In Ontario and Alberta, you must complete the 40 hour Security Guard Training Course consisting of a minimum 33.5 hours spent on the online course. You must also complete an Emergency First Aid and CPR/AED training course for Ontario. And for Alberta, you either take Alberta Basic Security Training Course, or Accredited Basic Security Training Course.
Through our Ministry approved partner, you can complete your online course hours at your own pace. Their student support is available 7 days a week by phone and email.

Security License Training
Security Guard License training can be done completely online through our Ministry approved training partner. Coast2Coast ensures that once you’ve finished both your security license course and First Aid training, you’ll have everything needed to proceed to the next stage. This includes receiving your Training Completion Number (TCN), which is required before you can sit for the official security guard exam in Ontario or Alberta. The exam is designed to test your understanding of key concepts taught in the course, including legal rights, emergency procedures, and communications.

How do I Receive a Security License?
After completing your security license training as well as your first aid and CPR training, you will receive a Training Completion Number (TCN) which can be used to book the Ministry test. The test may be booked online and completed at an Ontario test centre for $35.00 plus 13% HST (price subject to change), this fee includes sitting for the test and marking it; but it doesn’t include the ServiceOntario licensing fee.
This test contains 60 multiple-choice questions which must be completed in 75 minutes. In order to pass, you must receive a 62% mark or higher. If you fail the test, you may try again as there are no limits in test attempts, but there will be a $35.00 plus 13% HST fee (price subject to change) each time.
The security license cost Ontario varies slightly depending on where and how you take your training and exam. Typically, the Ontario security guard exam costs $35.00 plus 13% HST, and the training course itself can range from $150 to $300, depending on the provider, and the processing time may vary . How Long is my Security License Valid?
In Ontario, a security license validity is linked to your birthday. The first time you receive a security license, it will expire after two birthdays. From then, you will need to renew it every two years.
Example: If your date of birth is January 5th and you received your security license on October 10th, 2019, your license will expire January 5th, 2021.
