Learn how to train future heroes in your community who are willing to risk their lives to save others. Our Canadian Red Cross Professional Responder Instructor Development course in Scarborough is designed to equip instructors with the specialized skills necessary to provide instruction for First Responders (FR), Emergency Medical Responders (EMR), and advanced first aid.

Candidates who satisfy the prerequisites for the course may begin learning the Fundamentals of Instruction component. During this component, the candidate must first finish an 8-hour online training before progressing to a 14.5-hour classroom portion. Once in the class, they will be taught by an Instructor Trainer who will help them put into practice what they learned from the online portion.

Upon finishing this module, students may proceed with the 2-day Discipline-Specific component which will ready them to teach Professional Responder courses. Once they complete the Discipline-Specific component, they will move on to the Teaching Experience component. Candidates are then able to instruct in a dynamic classroom setting. Only after this is completed can their certification be processed.

The candidate will be provided with an e-certificate that’s valid for three years upon completion of the program. We will verify that the candidate has completed all of the necessary components and courses for teaching, as specified by them. This certification enables students to teach Canadian Red Cross First Aid courses, including CPR, Emergency First Aid, Standard First Aid, Child Care First Aid, and Marine Basic First Aid.

With prior expertise, candidates may qualify for the Instructor Development Program in one of two ways:

  1. They are First Aid instructors from another ministry-approved First Aid agency
  2. They are either be a Canadian Red Cross Water Safety Instructor or Instructor Trainer, or an educator at the elementary or secondary level

Candidates will be trained via one of the following methods, depending on which category they fall into: Those who fall under group 1 will take their pre-existing First Aid knowledge & expertise from other organizations and build upon it with the Red Cross First Aid training program.

Once the candidate’s skills and prerequisites are checked, they may begin the Fundamentals of Instruction component. This is 8 hours online and 14.5 hours in class. Once complete, the candidate may skip the Discipline-Specific component as they have knowledge in teaching First Aid & CPR. Finally, they will have a brief in-class Teaching Experience.

Candidates who meet the requirements of group 2 will have a slightly different pathway. To complete this course path, the applicant must first pass a skills assessment and pass the necessary prerequisites.
