First Aid and CPR/AED Instructor Transfer Course

Canadian Red Cross Instructor Development Transfer courses are designed for those who fall under one of the following categories:

1) You are a current First Aid Instructor with another recognized organization

2) You are a current Red Cross Swimming & Water Safety Instructors with certification in Standard First Aid

3) You are a teacher with an Education degree and current Standard First Aid

Candidates work with Canadian Red Cross instructional resources, and may have pre- and post-course requirements in order to become certified as a Canadian Red Cross Instructor.

All instructor courses are based on Canadian Red Cross Guidelines and participants will receive the Canadian Red Cross Certificate valid for 3 years upon successful completion of the course.

Skills Checklists
In order to become an Instructor with the Canadian Red Cross, you must submit a skills evaluation prior to completing the Instructor course. There are sets of skills checklists for each program and course, available on the Instructor Network. The candidate must successfully complete all skills without coaching.

Post-Course Requirements
Meets the requirement of the co‐teach form as outlined by the Instructor Trainer

Instructor Pathways:

Option 1: Instructors with Prior First Aid Instructing Experience

This option is for Instructor candidates who have completed an instructor course with another recognized First Aid agency. They must follow the same steps as a new instructor, minus the Discipline Specific Classroom Component (step 3).

Prerequisites: you must be 18 years or older, hold a valid Canadian Red Cross certificate in the discipline you wish to teach (ex: First Aid instructors must hold a valid Standard First Aid certificate) and must have successfully performed a skills evaluation.

Course Length: 8 hours online, 14.5 hours (2 days) in-class

Complete the Fundamentals of Instruction by finishing the online component prior to attending an in-class session. It is mandatory to complete the online component successfully as this information is applied to the in-class portion of your training.

You must attend and participate in 100% of the course.

Since you are currently an instructor with another First Aid agency, you can skip this step.

Course Length: 30-45 minutes online, in-class time varies on participant’s competency

You must successfully complete the online component (The Teaching Experience – First Aid Programs) first. Then, complete the classroom Teaching Experience component.

3 attempts are allowed.

Earn a digital copy of your Instructor Certification.

  • Valid for 3 years

Post-Course Requirements
Meets thee requirement of the co-teach form as outlined by the Instructor Trainer

Option 2: Instructors with Prior Experience as an Educator or Red Cross Water Safety Instructor

The second option is for Instructor candidates who have a valid certification as a Canadian Red Cross Water Safety Instructor/Instructor Training. This option is also available for educators (elementary/secondary). They must follow the same steps as a new instructor, minus the Fundamentals of Instruction Component (step 2).

Prerequisites: you must be 18 years or older, hold a valid Canadian Red Cross certificate in the discipline you wish to teach (ex: First Aid instructors must hold a valid Standard First Aid certificate) and must have successfully performed a skills evaluation.

Since you already have experience as an educator or Red Cross Water Safety Instructor, you can skip this step.

Course Length: 14.5 hours (2 days) in-class

Complete a discipline-specific class successfully (ex: if you wish to become a First Aid Instructor, you must complete the First Aid & CPR program discipline)

Disciplines:

  • First Aid & CPR
  • Wilderness & Remote First Aid
  • Professional Responder
  • Psychological First Aid

You must attend and participate in 100% of the course.

Course Length: 30-45 minutes online, in-class time varies on participant’s competency

You must successfully complete the online component (The Teaching Experience – First Aid Programs) first. Then, complete the classroom Teaching Experience component.

  • Hold a valid Canadian Red Cross certificate for each requested discipline
  • Demonstrate a positive attitude
  • 100% attendance of the course
  • Demonstrate knowledge of the individual approach to instructing
  • Be able to demonstrate at any time all first aid and CPR/AED skills that are required for the course according to the Canadian Red Cross standards
  • Be flexible and adapt to the needs of each group
  • Be able to positively motivate and influence a group
  • Represent the Red Cross in a professional manner
Teaching Ability:
  • Understand how people learn
  • Effectively communicate information to a small group
  • Accept and give appropriate feedback
  • Teach and evaluate participants according to established standards
  • Identify how to include all participants in the course
Certification:
Instructor certifications are three years in length
